The Seasons is a set of four works, each of which can be effectively performed individually. Barberi wrote Summer for a choreographer friend who requested a bluesy American song for her recital. The piece contains some interesting meter changes, probably the result of composing it with dance in mind. Springtime was written a year later. Composed around the circle of fifths, it captures the romantic feelings of spring. A song built on whole step progressions evoked the icey sounds of Winter. Autumn was composed last, in a minor key.
David and Barberi collaborated to shape the four songs into a set of compositions for chorus. The combination of Barberi's picturesque words and melodies and David's elegant arrangements has produced a beautifully integrated ensemble depicting nature's splendor.
